Communications Matter

In a study from the 2000s, researchers looked at how communication effects elite athletes. In the end, they discovered that the more a coach communicated with the players the better the team performed.

This isn’t rocket science by any stretch of the imagination – but what it does show and emphasize is how vital communication is in all facets of life.

As a healthcare provider, being a good communicator is absolutely essential. In today’s blog I want to share with you about why communication is important when you’re a patient at New Leaf Chiropractic & Wellness in Seattle’s Madison Park neighborhood.

When you come to the office for your initial consultation, we will spend time talking about your lifestyle. This includes all aspects of your health and active lifestyle. I enjoy staying active - as you can see in the photo, I recently spent a few days fishing. As your chiropractor, I need to know what’s brought you in to the office. But I also want to know about your daily activities. Are you a runner? Do you play tennis? How far do you walk your dog? What does work look like for you? Do you find yourself sitting at a desk most the day? Understanding the full breadth of your activities helps tell your story. It’s important to know this as we build your care program.

When we collaborate to build your care program, I want to understand your goals. This could include running a marathon, relieving pain, getting active, or finding help for your diabetic neuropathy.

I have often found that it’s not what patients say, but what they don’t say that provides insights. Because I have several years’ experience, I know how to ask the questions that get to the heart of the matter. While a patient may say they want to get more active, they could actually be searching for ways to build their confidence – which for them is a result of living an active lifestyle. If I can understand your goals, I can help you achieve them.

As a chiropractor and wellness advocate, I’m a firm believer that communication is key in a partnership. If you’re looking for a partner in your wellness journey, look no further than New Leaf Chiropractic & Wellness here in Seattle.
